The intention behind Ferrari’s first boat is the Ferrari of boats, as its name makes clear. This is the Ferrari Hypersail, a sailboat designed to perform like a Ferrari hypercar.

It even looks something like a hypercar, the streamlined shape evoking that of a Ferrari Monza SP1/SP2, the super-limited performance cars that today sell for upwards of $3 million, and the boat’s streamlined coachroof mimicking the hull of the Le Mans-winning 499P.

Ferrari finally put these details properly on display at this year’s Milan Design Week, where, after announcing the Hypersail last year through digital renders, the Italian company unveiled its dark grey and “Giallo Fly” yellow paintjob that mimics the colors often seen on Ferrari race cars while steering away from the company’s signature red.

It’s the closest look at what Ferrari’s crack team of engineers has been cooking up, led by nautical engineer and sailor Enrico Voltolini, who raced in the America’s Cup. But it only makes Ferrari fans’ anticipation higher for when this 100-foot yacht finally hits the water later this year. Although, really, this boat flies over the water.

The Hypersail’s foils (those are the long, angular, wing-like structures poking out from either side of the boat’s body) will lift the Hypersail’s vast hull above the water at top speeds, meaning less drag and more speed. And this thing can really move.

Powered by a mix of solar panels with wind and kinetic energy that makes it energy self-sufficient, the Hypersail is reported to hit speeds of over 50 knots (that’s over 57 mph). For reference, the Comanche, a bespoke record-breaking sailboat of the same size, rarely hits over 40 knots.

That means the Italian car company’s first vessel is on track to being the quickest of its kind. Would you expect any different from the Ferrari of sailboats?
