New Balance’s Numeric 480 has quietly become the brand’s most reliable skate silhouette, often described as the dad-shoe brand’s answer to the Nike Dunk. With its next release, the shoe leans fully into that comparison by going “Panda.” And honestly, it works.

For the uninitiated, the 480 dates back to 1983, originally designed as a basketball shoe before finding new life under New Balance’s skate-focused Numeric line.

Since then, it’s been pushed into proper skate territory through a steady run of collaborations with crews and shops including LA’s Bronze56K and a host of great colorways

Over time, the comparison to the Dunk has stuck. Similar proportions, similar versatility, similar crossover appeal between skate and lifestyle worlds. At this point, a black-and-white 480 feels inevitable.

True to its name, the New Balance Numeric 480 “Panda” arrives in a clean black and white leather build, keeping things simple without feeling flat.

The sneaker features a reinforced toe cap built for skating and sits atop New Balance’s responsive, comfort-forward FuelCell foam. It’s all grounded in an ’80s basketball silhouette that feels timeless rather than retro for the sake of it.

Available now for $120 on New Balance’s website, the 480 does resemble Nike’s once-ubiquitous “Panda” Dunk, a shoe that once dominated streets, much like today’s adidas Sambas. The difference is intent.

The 480 doesn’t feel like it’s chasing that moment. Instead, it reads as a reminder that a well-proportioned black-and-white sneaker doesn’t need hype to work. Sometimes, it just needs the right shape and history.
