Comme des Garcons / Harmony Korine
1 / 3

CDG Play, officially known as Play COMME des GARÇONS, is synonymous with the Converse Chuck Taylor. The CDG Play Converse were once so ubiquitous that the "heart shoe" inspired much memery for a spell, which really only proved their power.

And as CDG Play once again takes on Converse's One Star sneaker for an all-new, semi-weird collaboration, it taps into the a suitably adventurous member of the CDG universe to make a splash.

Harmony Korine, of all people, brought his "multimedia collective" EDGLRD to the table, premiering the COMME des GARÇONS x Converse One Star Academy Pro by way of some gently warped imagery that stars Converse CONS skater Alexis Sablone.

The connection isn't really all that crazy — Korine has long been affiliated with skate culture (Supreme collabs and all) and has lensed fashion campaigns for the likes of Gucci — but at face value represents an interesting juxtaposition of subculture and the mainstream.

At the heart of it all — ha ha — is the latest CDG Play Converse, which takes a mildly avant approach to displaying the cute heart logo that made the CDG Play Chucks such a crossover smash.

The design is actually a riff on the CDG Play Converse Ox from a few years ago, a One Star-adjacent shape that slapped a sideways heart logo next to the Converse branding. However, the new shoe — launching December 6 on Converse's website and Dover Street Market web stores and IRL locations — interrupts a vertical, lightly oversized CDG Play logo with abrupt, contrasting leather branding, creating a mildly wild graphic.

Otherwise, yep, it's a CDG Play Converse. Par for the course with CdG sub-labels, and especially for CDG Play.

It may not convert the skeptics but for all the folks keeping the funny heart shoes alive, this one's for you.
