Hope, Love & the Future the Focus as Weekday Partners With Civil Rights Defenders
With global events taking an interesting turn of late, the Swedish fashion brand Weekday has decided to partner with the Swedish human rights organization, Civil Rights Defenders.
The partnership taps into Weekday's zeitgeist project which sees a new T-shirt design screen-printed and created in-store every week at selected outlets of the global retailer. In December, spanning weeks 47 to 51, five T-shirt designs based on hope and love will be created, with 30% of the sales price from those tees and accompanying totes, going to the charity. A further 5% of the sales price of online gift shop items will also be donated.
One of the T-shirts will commemorate the work of Vietnamese activist and blogger Mother Mushroom. Already detained several times by authorities, her latest incarceration came earlier this year in October, where she now faces charges of "conducting propaganda against the state."
The Southeast Asian nation has been a one-party state and is one of six countries in the world that still outwardly espouses communism ever since the U.S. lost its destructive war with the country back in 1975. However, Mother Mushroom is one of the few people who are voicing dissent in the country and breaking ground for freedom of expression. Her commemorative T-shirt will be available in week 50.
The organization Civil Rights Defenders was founded in 1982, born out of the Cold War and what was known as the Helsinki Movement which started following the signing of the 1975 Helsinki Accords between Eastern and Western countries. Now, the group is global in scope and works across four continents to defend and empower those fighting for political and civil rights.
