Even in muted "Light Bone," Nike's latest Air Max Muse stands out.

Despite being a new addition to Nike's Air Max repertoire, the Muse has a nostalgic feel thanks to its stubby build, single air unit, and thick outsole — all features that recall the sneakers of the early 2000s. The sense of familiarity could also stem from the sneaker's resemblance to the Nike Monarch, the most geriatric and controversial dad shoe produced by the Swoosh.

Regardless of what's causing this wave of déjà vu, the Muse has been a sneaker to watch since before it was even released.

First teased by Olympian gymnast and Nike athlete Jordan Chiles in 2024, the silver-black Muse quietly popped up online earlier this month. The oil-dipped olive-black colorway dropped in a similarly inconspicuous manner (many pairs are still available online).

But a shoe doesn't have to sell out instantly to prove it has takeover potential. Just take a look at the journey of the Monarch sneaker, which started off as a lowkey dad shoe and blossomed into a viral (and contentious) shoe favored by the likes of Russell Westbrook and Mr. Champagne Papi himself.

If history really does repeat itself, then the Air Max Muse is slowly but surely on its way to becoming an “It" sneaker. Just give it a little time.
