Sneaker drops for specific occasions often fail the longevity test, building hype for a few weeks around a celebration and then fading into obscurity once it’s over. The Three Stripes’ latest drop to celebrate Chinese New Year, however, features one of the best limited-edition Superstar designs that we can remember.

The adidas Superstar II CNY drops alongside a full apparel collection built around the theme “Classic Forward, Lead the Charge,” and riffs off the Baijiayi, a symbol of shared blessings and protection.

In honor of the year of the Fire Horse, adidas’ Superstar carries a number of subtle references. Take the single red lace addition, jumping out from the clean white construction and setting the tone for the holiday, symbolizing good fortune, joy, happiness, prosperity, vitality, and success.

Further details extend to the hairy heel tabs and stripes that bring a tactile element to the design, and the gold-tone dubrae which positions the adidas Trefoil inside a horseshoe.
